The black cladding we offer owes its appearance to a black charcoal layer. Our fire masters apply this charcoal layer by burning the wood piece by piece in our own workshop in Leersum.
Inspired by the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique, each plank is given a durable and unique charcoal layer. And the wood is therefore better protected against moisture and insects.

Sustainability is very important to Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban. First of all, wood is itself a sustainable raw material and retains CO2. In addition, we only use wood from forests under supervision. In these forests, our suppliers replant trees.
For every tree Zwarthout l Shou Sugi Ban uses, we replant trees. This replanting is done locally as much as possible: near Leersum, and partly in France. Our suppliers, including the Forestry Commission, also plant trees back for every tree we use. So all the wood burned and used by us is planted back!
All our clients can plant back the wood they have bought during the annual Zwarthout Tree Planting Day in one of the estates around our company. This allows us and our clients to watch our ‘own’ trees grow over the years.
