At Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban, you can find authentic wall cladding for outdoors. This is because we offer black wood produced using the traditional Shou Sugi Ban burning technique. With this, we provide the wood with a black charred layer. Not only does this technique give the wood an authentic look, but it also makes it last longer.
In Shou Sugi Ban (‘burnt cypress’), softwood is burnt on one side by binding three planks together into a chimney and lighting a fire at the bottom. This 18th-century tradition originated in Japan. Today, we combine traditional with modern techniques. Our fire masters burn the wood in a self-developed oven to give it a black charred layer. The charred layer of each wood species has a different appearance, texture and is maintenance-free.
Besides being passionate about the Shou Sugi Ban technique, we value sustainability. To burn wall cladding for outdoor use, we use wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. For every tree used, trees are planted back. In this way, the forests are preserved for a long time.
For every tree we use, we replant trees. This replanting is done locally as much as possible: near Leersum, and partly in France. Our suppliers, including the Forestry Commission, also replant trees.
So all the wood we burn and use is replanted!
All our clients can replant the wood they have bought during the annual Zwarthout Tree Planting Day in one of the estates around our company. This allows us and our clients to watch our ‘own’ trees grow over the years.
