LennaMare secondary school
The new LennaMare secondary school in Lemmer, designed by BDP, is an example of future-proof and climate-adaptive education facilities.
The 3,100 m² building accommodates 355 students and combines a strong identity with a deep connection to the local context. The façades are made from Shodoshima charred wood by Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban, a material choice that evokes the aesthetic of traditional Frisian farmhouses while ensuring sustainability and low maintenance. The longitudinal façades, constructed from sustainably treated softwood, reinforce the building’s warm, inviting appearance and human scale.
Sustainability and circular construction are at the core of the design. The building is also designed to be energy-neutral in the near future. Every material selection and design decision was made in accordance with ESG principles, responsible resource use, and a healthy learning environment.
The Shodoshima façades, together with the softwood, form the visual and sustainable heart of the design, where aesthetic quality and long-lasting performance go hand in hand.
