Maintenance-free wooden facade in fire class B
Fire safety is an important issue in construction. Especially now that more and more buildings are made with wooden structures and wooden (bio-based) cladding. Other natural materials, such as cellulose, wood fibre, flax and straw, are also being used more often. But fire safety and eco-friendly materials do not always go well together. Yet it is possible to make a fire-safe façade that meets fire class B -s1,d0 without impregnated fire retardants in the wood.
Bio-based, circular and fire class B
Burnt bamboo, or Yoroi van Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban, fits perfectly within the growing need for circular and bio-based building materials. The bamboo planks made from MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® are not only rapidly renewable, but also extremely dimensionally stable and durable in use. As the material meets fire class B-s1,d0 without chemical fire retardants, it remains fully recyclable and retains its eco-friendly character. This makes it extremely suitable for sustainable building projects where circularity, health and safety are key.
Yoroi with very high fire class B-s1,d0
Yoroi is made of MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® plank. The bamboo planks are treated with fire by fire masters from Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban. This creates a strong coal layer. Because the bamboo has already been burned once, it will no longer catch fire when burning, but only glow. Thus, the fire does not spread. Yoroi wall boards therefore score well above fire class B-s1,d0 in end-use fire tests. The Yoroi thus has all classification reports for fire class B-s1-d0 in ‘end-use conditions’.
Maintenance-free timber facade and colour retention
In addition to its functional benefits, a black-coated Yoroi facade also offers powerful aesthetic benefits. The matt black colour of the coal layer gives the façade a timeless, Uv-resistant, architectural look that perfectly suits both modern and more traditional designs.
Because the colour comes from the burning process itself – and not from paint or coating – the appearance remains unchanged for years, without fading or weathering. This means that the façade not only retains its fire resistance, but also its visual impact.
At most, only maintenance is required to clean the boards, but repainting or maintenance to maintain the fire rating is thus unnecessary. The result is a façade that continues to impress, season after season.
The Yoroi facade boards offer an innovative solution to a common challenge in construction: combining bio-based materials with a high fire safety rating.
The unique combustion method creates a maintenance-free facade that is not only aesthetically pleasing and sustainable, but also meets the strictest fire safety standards.
For architects, builders and clients striving for both safety and a natural look, Yoroi is a future-proof choice.
