Cladding boards are traditionally fixed with screws, but an increasing number of projects now opt for a rail system for facade cladding. With the Grad® rail system, wooden cladding boards are installed invisibly, without visible screws or nails.
At Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban, we use the Grad® installation system because of its combination of aesthetics, durability, and ease of installation.
Advantages of a rail system for cladding boards
Invisible fastening of facade cladding
The main advantage of a rail system is the clean, screw-free finish. The cladding boards are provided with a rear groove and clipped onto fasteners mounted on the rail. This creates a high-quality facade without visible fixing points.
This makes the system highly suitable for modern timber cladding and architectural applications.
Ventilation behind the cladding boards (important for wood)
A well-ventilated wooden facade is essential for durability. The Grad® system automatically creates a ventilated cavity behind the cladding boards.
This open space allows moisture to evaporate and the wood to dry after rain. As a result, wood rot is reduced and the facade maintains its appearance for longer.
When using the Grad® rail system, a double timber batten structure is not required, simplifying the build-up.
Slim and efficient facade construction
The Grad® flat rails have a limited thickness of approximately 18 mm. Combined with 22 mm thick Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban cladding boards, this results in a total facade build-up of around 40 mm.
This makes the system ideal for slim facade details and modern architecture.
Fast installation and efficient processing
After installing the rails, cladding boards can be quickly and easily clipped into place. This provides:
- Shorter installation time
- Efficient on-site processing
- Precise facade alignment
A rail system for facade cladding therefore increases construction speed without compromising quality.
Removable cladding boards without damage
A key advantage of the Grad® system is that cladding boards can be easily removed using a special tool, without damaging the wood.
This makes the system unique compared to traditional fastening methods. Boards can be removed, reused, and reinstalled.
Sustainable facade system with maximum flexibility
The Grad® rail system is not always the most cost-effective initial solution, but it offers clear advantages in terms of durability, aesthetics, and maintenance.
Because the cladding boards are reusable and demountable, the system is highly suitable for circular construction and sustainable timber facades.
